How Do I Soak in God’s Spirit?

How Do I Soak in God’s Spirit?

As I share in my ebook, Creating Greater Intimacy with God, many years ago I started a practice that today is taking the Christian community by storm. Back then, I didn’t have a name for it; it was just my time that I spent sitting in the presence of the Lord. Each evening after everyone had settled down, I would make my way to my sofa chair in my room, door locked behind me with a do not disturb sign on my door. Once seated and comfortable in my chair, I would put on some soothing music and then close my eyes. For the one to two hours I bathed myself in God’s love and glory. Almost immediately His sweet presence would enter my room. It was like having a daily appointment with God. I didn’t do anything in particular while I sat there. I was just abiding in Christ.

During this time sometimes I would imagine myself laying my head on Jesus’s knee as he sat or resting my head on his shoulder. Other times I would envision myself dancing with the Lord in a kind of waltz fashion. I would see his eye’s intently looking into mine with a piercing and penetrating love and power.

If anything was bothering me or on my mind, I would visualize myself giving it to the Lord or even nailing it to the cross. It was a time that I could cast all my cares upon him.

Sometimes the presence of God was so strong that I never wanted to leave this place. I felt I could sit there forever. I didn’t want to go back to reality. In God’s presence everything seemed okay. It was in God’s secret place that I was sheltered from the storms and where I received my rejuvenation and strength.

Little did I know that in just a few years I would find out that believers all over the world were engaging in this practice and that some had actually given it a name: Soaking in God’s Spirit or Soaking in the Spirit.

Just recently I held a Christian Meditation Retreat in the beautiful Shasta mountains where we, as a group, experienced what it means to soak in God’s spirit or his presence. The terminology for soaking in the spirit makes is similar to soaking up all of God’s attributes like a sponge or wading in his glory. It is a time that we are just “being” with God in the same way that Adam and Eve walked with God in the cool of the day. The scriptures tell us that in God’s presence is fullness of joy.

Recently I have began again to incorporate the practice of soaking in God’s spirit into my Christian meditation practice and it is just as rewarding and meaningful as it was years ago. It, along with other forms of Biblical meditation, provides me with a variety of tools that help me to quiet my mind, tame my emotions, awaken my spirit, and subdue my fleshy nature. I can’t tell you how grateful that I am to be able to manage my thoughts and actions instead of them managing me. It is an ongoing process that will continue until I go to be with the Lord.

In the rest of this article I’d like to give you a few instructions or suggestions on how to soak in the spirit. I’ve given you many already, but here are a few more.

1.Find a comfortable place to sit or lie down where you won’t be disturbed for at least 30 minutes.

2.Choose a soothing music CD that ministers to your spirit or touches your heart, instrumental is best but you can alternate.

3.Set a timer for the length of time you want to dwell with God. It is easy for minutes to become hours and keeping a timer will keep you from missing important appointments.

4.Don’t use this time for Bible reading or doing anything other than sitting at Jesus’s feet. We are usually so busying doing for the Lord and trying to minister to Him and his people, that we don’t know how to let God minister to us.

5.You may use some of this time for prayer or journaling any inspirational words from the Lord to you, but let the majority of the time be just being.

6.The first 10-minutes are generally the hardest because our minds are often restless and filled with thoughts or other worries. Use this time to scan your body for any tension and use the power of deep breathing to breath into, release, and soothe away stress. If your mind won’t be still, keep it in the present moment by repeat the phrase “peace be still” or “Jesus is my peace,” (see side bar) each time you realize you’ve been caught in a mental drama.

7.If you have a particular care or worry, visualize yourself nailing it to Jesus’s cross or tell God about it and give it to him. He tells us to “cast every care upon Him because he cares for us” and “all you who are weary and of a heavy heart come unto me and I will give you rest.”

8.If you can, make your own appointment with God each day to spend quiet time with Him or make it a family affair. Soaking in the God’s Spirit has the power to transform you and your entire family.

Below are several of my very FAVORITE CDs that I currently use for my Soaking in the Spirit time. The first two CDs are by David Allan Anderson and I am so thankful that he has given me permission to carry them on my website. Both CDs are instrumental and will take you directly into the presence of God. Click on CD cover to learn more or to order.

How Your Subconscious Mind Affects Your Thoughts & Behavior

How Your Subconscious Mind Affects Your Thoughts & Behavior

The subconscious mind is the most wonderful gift by God to you. It is the most powerful part of your mind because it controls your destiny. While the conscious mind is in charge of thoughts and actions that are under your full control, the subconscious mind takes charge of your feelings and emotions. How you direct your subconscious mind will greatly determine and affect the quality of your life.

Your Subconscious Mind Stores Information

You should be careful with what kind of information you put inside your mind because they go directly to your subconscious. If you fill your mind with negative thoughts then you tend to be more negative in life. Therefore, remove or limit the unnecessary harmful things that you see and hear which your subconscious mind might absorb. Negative information usually comes from the mass media such as the television, newspaper or radio. Try to fill your subconscious mind with more positive thoughts which will result to a more positive outlook.

Repetitive Affirmations Affect your Subconscious

Your subconscious mind stores knowledge through repetitions. When you constantly tell yourself about an idea or a belief, your subconscious mind will ultimately accept it. Positive affirmations can therefore be effective in achieving what you want in life because your thoughts control your actions. If you speak unkindly about yourself, then you tend to feel inferior and insecure. So try to appreciate your good qualities and compliment yourself for your positive traits. Do this positive self-talk as often as you can so that your subconscious mind will also see you in a positive way. Self-confidence that results from a positive outlook of your own self can lead to success, prosperity and happiness in life.

Use your Subconscious for a Healthier you

Your subconscious mind has a big role in getting rid of your vices and bad habits. Since it is in charge of your feelings and emotions, it can generate both enjoyment and fear. You probably enjoy engaging in your bad habits or vices but your subconscious mind can also produce the feeling of fear or anxiety due to their negative effects. This can serve as a powerful force for you to quit your vices and bad habits. The subconscious mind is also known for its power to heal. Doctors say that the mind and the body always go hand in hand in regaining a person’s health. A patient has a greater chance to recover from his illness if he believes that he would rather than if he believes that he wouldn’t.

People sometimes forget the important role of the subconscious mind in their life. You should remember that it is a very powerful tool which can help you reach your goals and achieve the kind of life you want. It is a gift from God that must be used correctly and wisely.

How Do You Know When God is Speaking To You?

Question: How do you know when God is speaking to you?

Answer: God speaks to his children in various ways. He speaks to us through the Bible or the Word of  God.  Often times, meditating upon God’s word will bring enlightenment and wisdom.  God’s words are alive, powerful, and transformative.

God  may  also speak to us through others.  Many Christians may have gone through similiar circumstances or experiences and have insight that can help you.  God will even send people your way at just the right time to give you a word regarding your situation.  God also speaks to us through the power of the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, he will infill us with his wisdom, knowledge, and power. Oftentimes without any words, we will just have a knowing or an unction  in our heart. For example, you may feel a desire to give something to someone to bless them or phone a friend that has been on your mind.

God also speaks to us in a still small voice.  This can also be a knowing, an unction, or a word(s) that penetrate our spirit.  Many times these words just seem to come from nowhere but they are relevant to your situation. God spoke to me one time in a busy restaurant. It was not audible but it was very loud, He said, “Rhonda what are you doing here?”

I believe that the more we can clear our hearts and mind from worry, fear, and constant chatter or daydreaming, that we create an environment in our hearts and mind to hear God more clearly.

Begin to follow the words or impressions that God’s spirit puts on your heart, especially those that require faith.  If you can’t hear God speaking to you through the methods above, begin to spend some time  in silence, solitude, and Christian meditation, to prepare your mind to be more open to communicating with the Lord.

Is Christian Meditation Biblical?

Question: Is Christian Meditation Biblical?

Answer:  One of my favorite scriptures is from Joshua 1:8. It reads, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

According to the scripture, meditating on God equals success. I don’t think the real question is whether meditation is Biblical. I believe the big question amongst believers is “how” do we meditate on the Lord.

There are many forms of meditation that Christians will benefit from.  Some of these are Scripture meditation, soaking on God’s spirit, or even just meditating on a scriptural passage or word, like a mantra. If you want more details about how to meditate on God, please view the youtube video I created title, Should Christians Meditate and If So How?   Also, here is a link to an older article I wrote on Christian Meditation Techniques.  It doesn’t include Scripture Meditation which I now encourage. How to Break Free From Negative Thoughts

A mind that is filled with negative thoughts is like a dark cave that limits positive and faith-filled thoughts from entering in. Having a chronically negative thought life is a mental mindset that focuses more on what is wrong, than all that is right in our life. Generally negative thinking isn’t something that just happens overnight. Most people have been thinking the same thoughts for years without even realizing it. If you were to take an inventory of your mind, you would see that your mind plays the same messages most of the time. So how can you break free from negative thinking?

Focus on the Positive

Although we all have many unpleasant experiences at one time or another, there are just as many positive experiences as well, we just forget to recognize them. Our positive experiences get lost under our negativity and despair, yet they are all around us. Begin by keeping a gratitude journal to record 3-5 positive events that happen everyday. It could be a simple as getting a great parking space or eating a great cookie. As you notice or focus on the positive, you will not only attract more positive situations but you’re eyes will be open to seeing them more prevalently as well.

Practice Meditation

Many people don’t understand the beauty of meditation. Although meditation creates fear in some people, it really is unfounded. Meditation simply is a way to quiet our minds and teach us how to get control over our thoughts. It is also effective in making us aware of what we think about on a daily basis so we can change our thoughts if they really aren’t promoting peace, joy, and love. The Bible tells us to renew our minds and to bring every thought under God’s control. You can find all types of meditations on a variety of topics. There are guided meditations, Christian meditations, and meditations that use nature to help us relax. By practicing daily meditation you will learn to free yourself from your compulsive thoughts, that record in your head that bombards you with constant negativity.

Have Faith In God

Another way to squash negative thoughts is to have faith in the presence greater than you. When you believe that God is in control and that all things are working together for your highest good, you can let go of negative thoughts that create fear and doubt. Reading the Bible or stories of people that have overcome through their faith will inspire you to trust God more and help to restore your own peace of mind. Also, knowing that you are not alone and that others have suffered the same experiences have overcome will give you a sense of empowerment and inner joy.

Spend Time in Nature

It’s hard to spend time surrounded by the beauty in nature and hold onto negative thinking. That is because nature is healing and soothing to the soul and spirit. Therefore, spend time regularly just sitting in a park, driving through the country, or watching a sunset. Somehow our problems just don’t seem as big and we can easily get a better perspective on our problems. In even nature the storms come, but once they pass, a blanket of peace returns. We must learn to anchor ourselves to God through the storms and then once they pass, allow our peace to prevail.

Christian Health: Is God’s Perfect Will That You Don’t Get Sick?

Christian Health: Is God’s Perfect Will That You Don’t Get Sick?

Hosea 4:6 declares that “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.”

Each year, statistics show that disease and illness are at record numbers. Heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes ranked as the top killers of the world. Millions of dollars are spent to treat these illnesses and to eradicate their roots.  When disease strikes Christians, we look for tools to strengthen our faith and claim healing. Numerous scriptures attest to God’s desire and power to heal us and we know from the Bible that healing was a huge part of His ministry. However, with all the knowledge that we have today regarding health, nutrition, and spirituality, shouldn’t our focus be more on prevention? Besides it is cheaper and more practical than spending many days in the bed, not to forget the huge hospital bill.

Although God offers healing, we can prevent many illnesses with some simple lifestyle changes.

Watch What You Eat

Last week I spent the night at a friend’s home who lives out of town. When I arrived, my friend had made me dinner. I took one bite to show my appreciation for her generosity but I couldn’t eat anymore. My friend had made spaghetti with white noodles, canned spaghetti sauce, and hotdogs. Oh, and there was some French bread too. Although I do use canned spaghetti sauce on occasion, I only eat whole grain noodles and haven’t eaten hotdogs in years. As I browsed through my friend’s refrigerator and cabinets, she had absolutely nothing I would want to put in my body even through her pantry was full of food, or stuff that looked like food. Almost everything I laid eyes on was processed from fruit drinks and boxed scalloped potatoes to hamburger helper. This isn’t real food and it doesn’t provide our body with the nourishment it needs. In fact, this kind of diet can only make us ill. As much as possible,  eliminate all processed foods from your diet- that means almost anything that doesn’t require refrigeration, comes in a box, or has ingredients on the labels that we’ve never heard of before. Next, buy organic fruits and vegetables that are in season by shopping at your local health food store or farmer’s market. You can even buy organic meats that are not full of hormones. There is nothing better you can do to stay healthy than to eat fresh, organic, and whole foods. Consider becoming a nutritarian, 90% of your diet consist of plant based foods, nuts, and beans.

Get Moving

Movement creates momentum. Movement stirs up what is stagnate. Movement releases those hormones in your body that promote well-being. Movement reduces depression. In fact, in a study of 156 clinically depressed people, they found that 30 minutes of exercise three times per week was more effective at lifting depression than the antidepressant Zoloft. (Source: Walking by Faith by Christian Fitness Guru Leslie Sansone).  It’s important to include some form of exercise in your day. It can be as simple as a 30-minute walk to a vigorous workout.
Even God Rested

One day out of the week must be devoted to rest, fellowship, and time with God. Your Sabbath can be any day of the week you designate.  For many Christians it will be Sunday or if you happen to be a 7th Day Adventist, Saturday.  This is your day of rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation.  In Genesis, God worked six days to create the earth and on the seventh day he rested.  If our midnight oils never stop burning, we will experience burn out.  Your Sabbath should include some time of silence and reflection of the previous past week.  This is an excellent time to journal.  Try to spend time with family or friends.  Break bread together.  Take your family to the park for a picnic.  If you are single, find four or more friends and several Sunday per month (if that is your Sabbath day), rotate to each other’s home for dinner, a great movie, or to play board games.  Lastly, enjoy yourself, and just have fun. You may attend church service to worship God collectively, but if you have to spend your entire day at church, designate a different day for your Sabbath. Spending all day in church services is more like going to work than rest.

Watch Your Thoughts

In Hosea, God said that my people are destroyed by lack of knowledge. When we abuse our body and mind, it’s going to take a toll on our health. If we harbor negativity, unforgiveness, anger, fear or hatred, it will affect our body chemistry. Destructive thoughts and emotions can release unhealthy substances in our body that will lower our immune system and make us vulnerable to illnesses over time. Possessing a positive mental attitude is one of our responsibilities to maintaining good health. Through daily Christian meditation, believers can learn to quiet their mind and take authority over negative and fear-based thinking. Christ-centered meditation also purifies our heart and mind so that we can embrace God’s word in a greater way.

God told us not to be ignorant but to live as children of the light. It means that God wants us to use His word and knowledge not only for healing but to prevent disease in the first place by maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes eating nutritious foods, doing regular exercise, maintaining a healthy mind, and a purified spirit.

Are You Looking Only On the Surface of Things?

Are You Looking Only On the Surface of Things?

Are you looking only on the surface of things? – 2 Corin 10:7

We have all heard the saying, “all that glitters is not gold.” Yet people have a tendency to judge a thing based on outward appearances or a perceived positive outcome or feeling, when in fact, this could be the most detrimental course of all. Too often, we dwell upon that part of the road that happens to be the most tumultuous at the moment, not realizing there will be smooth pavement up ahead. We also believe that difficulty or unpleasant news or circumstances mean we have done something wrong, God is punishing us, or we are out of His will. We have learned to equate our perception of good with positivity and our perception of bad with negativity, but in many cases the complete opposite is true.

I remember when I was beginning my teacher education courses and was placed in a teacher mentorship program. In this program I was given a full one-year teaching position as I worked through the program. At the end of the year, the principal could decide, based upon my performance, whether she would hire me back. It was coming close to the end of the term and my evaluation.

Making Christian Meditation a Part of Your Daily Life

Making Christian Meditation a Part of Your Daily Life

meditating-on-gods-wordBy Rhonda Jones

Recently, I receive a letter from a subscriber who asked what was the best way to incorporate Christian meditation into their daily life. In this article I want to outline ways you can include Christian meditation into your daily schedule that has made my life so much more rewarding and fulfilling. There are numerous benefits to meditating on God and spending time in His presence. These include developing a more intimate relationship with Christ, eliminating worry and stress, creating a space for God to speak to our hearts, and becoming more sensitive to the Holy Spirit to name a few. However this article places more emphasize on the logistics than the benefits and gives some ideas of making Christian meditation a daily reality in your life as well.

In this  article I will also share with you some tools I use that are indispensable to me and have made my time with God so much richer. These are not requirements because in actuality to meditate or spend time with God, all you really need is a willing heart and a quiet space.

Overcome Negative Emotions By Casting Every Care on God- New Video

Overcome Negative Emotions By Casting Every Care on God- New Video

“Come unto to me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.”- Matthew 11:28

Overcoming negative emotions and eliminate fearI truly believe that depression is the result of internalized fear. Fear can take many forms such as anxiety, worry, guilt, regret, jealousy, and even anger. Usually we fear a loss or unwanted situation.  For example, fear of losing a loved one, wages, health, or even face can cause great anxiety. These situations, if not properly dealt with, steal our peace of mind and well-being.

As Christians, it’s important not to mask or deny our fears. Often we will try to cover our fears and insecurities with faith words. We often put on that Christian happy face and tell others we are blessed or everything is fine, even though there is deep pain in our heart.  In solitude, we may earnestly pray and ask God to take our pain away or sing songs of worship and praise, only for that heavy feeling to return again and again.

Though heartfelt, prayer and praise alone may not help in eliminating our negative emotions.  Instead of releasing them, they are buried further down into our subconscious mind, where they gnaw at us and weigh us down creating a perpetual dark cloud over our heads.

If we look at this from a logical standpoint, if we focus only on the emotion, its like implementing solutions to a problem that has not been properly identified. In almost all cases, our negative emotions are not the problem but only a symptom of it. The presence of negative emotions is the indicator that something is wrong. Feelings of anxiety, depression, anger, fear, or sadness is our body’s way of saying we are out of alignment with God’s perfect plan for us or His spiritual well-being. If we stop only at the negative emotion or try to eliminate the emotion without going deeper, it’s like putting a band aid on cancer.

Keep God First In All Things

by Minister Darrick D. McGhee

It’s a wonderful day to be a child of God. Today, I wonder if you remembered to tell the Lord, “thank you” for watching over you as you slept last night? Were you so preoccupied with getting to work that you forgot to take time to let God know how much you appreciate Him? Were you so focused on applying your make up, ironing your clothes, getting the children to the bus stop on time, that you forgot to offer God grateful praise? So often throughout our day, we become so focused on keeping our same routine until we forget the most important ingredient for the day. We become so committed to following the traditions of man that we unconsciously block God out of our daily tasks. How did you get where you are in your life? How did you achieve the success you enjoy today? How did you make it through the night when the enemy set demonic attacks against you? It was the Lord’s doing.
