Don’t Embrace Change With Fear

I heard a minister say recently, “We only think God is at work when we’re happy about what he is doing.”

We’ve been conditioned to equate favorable circumstances with God’s favor and unfavorable ones with evil. Yet God uses both the good and the bad in our life to accomplish his purpose in the world as well as our lives.

I’ve heard numerous times that God uses setbacks as setups. He knows that as long as things stay the same, so will we. But it’s only through circumstances that stretch us, and move us out of our comfort zone, that motivates us to change or take a new course of action.

I can reflect on numerous crisis in my life that I thought while I was going through them that the world would end. But in hind sight, what I thought was the end of the world turned out to work in my favor, and was just what I needed to received God’s blessing or move to the next level in my Christian walk.

I remember when I had my first real elementary school teaching job and the principal basically fired me. The week prior to my evaluation and possible rehire, everything, I mean everything, was going wrong. Literally, it was like invisible forces were setting me up to fail. During my evaluation the principal told me that I should look for a different profession and that I wasn’t cut out to be a teacher. I was devastated by her comments; however, within one week of substituting I was hired on permanently at another school that happened to be open year around. This turned out to be a tremendous blessing because I could do my student teaching there and saved thousands of dollars in tuition. I also didn’t have to take out any loans for living expenses. This would not have been possible at the previous school.  I ended up teaching 10 more years before leaving the profession altogether.

Then there was the time that my relationship ended with the man who I though was the man of my dreams. This caused me to spiral down into years of depression.  And although I know it wasn’t God’s perfect will for me to wallow in depression, he used it to catapult me into my Christian meditation business and ministry that has literally reached thousands of people worldwide. Through my heartache and pain, I discovered the transformative power of dwelling in God’s presence as well as low to bring every thought under the authority of Christ through meditation.

Like me, I’m sure you can reflect upon similar situations in your life where God took what was meant for evil and used it for your good. Romans 8:28 declares, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

All things meaning, our pain, tribulations, crisis, death, tragedy, illness, lack, obstacles, mountains, setbacks, trials, disappointments, and temptations.  No experience we face is wasted if we will trust God and believe that He has our back.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that we will be free from pain and suffering. In fact, Hebrews 5:8 says that Jesus learned obedience through what he suffered. But God doesn’t want us to fixate on the problem or our suffering; he wants us to keep our eyes on Him.  Isaiah 26:3 declares, “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee.” We will all face the storms of life, but as long as we stay centered in God, in the eye of the storm, we will come through safely and victoriously.

We must rely on God’s promise that says, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard the things that God as prepared to those who love him.” We should meditate on this often and get it rooted deeply in our heart.

2 Corinthians 4:17 says, “For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” As Christians we often forget that our time on this earth is temporary. Everything shall pass away. We’re just passing through. Too often we get caught up with the affairs of this life and to our own detriment. Jesus told us to be in the world but not of the world. When we measure our success and happiness by the worldly standards, we set ourselves up for disappointment. As Christians, we can’t serve both God and money.

1 Peter 4:12 declares, Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trials you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed.

God uses circumstances to grow and mature us, fulfill his purpose, move us in new directions, and stretch our faith. When things begin to stir in our life, it is usually an indication that transition is coming. That God has something better in store for us.  Just think if you had a 25-year old son who slept until noon, watched television to early evening, played basketball for several hours, and then came home, showered, and left until the wee hours in the morning, and this son lived with you! Let’s say he’s been doing this for the past year and feels no need or urgency to change. For him all is well. But on the other hand, you know he needs a job, responsibility, and to make a life for himself. Yet, if you take no action, your son will stay right where he is until something causes him to change is mind or alter his behavior. That something might very well be you. He wakes up one day to find out he must now pay you rent, that he must do certain chores, that he has a curfew and can no longer sleep past 8a.m. Well from the son’s perspective all hell has broke loose. He is under fire. But as his parents you see the big picture, even if he can’t.

God sees the big picture too. Just like in the above illustration, when we think the ship is sinking, God may saying, I’m got to move my child to the next level; I’ve got to move him or her into her purpose; I’ve got to get them walking in a new direction; I need to get them setup for my blessings; or I need to change their perspective about this life.”

God may be thinking, I want to do exceedingly abundantly above what they could ask for imagine or think, but it will never happen as long as they stay on that job, stay in that relationship, live in that house, stay at that church, keep those same habits, hang around that friend, or live in that city. God has to get us out of our bed of security and pull that teddy bear right out of our hands to get us to move.

He does this because He loves us and has so much more for us than what we’re settling for.

God tells us to take discipline as love! God loves us too much to let us stay where we are.

So whatever you’re going through today, what whatever you are suffering through, although it may be difficult, even unbearable, try to see it as just one piece or your puzzle and not the whole picture.

God is lord over everything. He allows it to rain on the just as well as the unjust but God doesn’t do things happenstance. Today, try to look beyond the trees right in the midst in an effort to see a glimpse of the forest ahead and meditate on the possibilities ahead of you!

Every Christian Needs a Vision and a Plan

Just recently God told me to create a vision chart. The chart contained pictures, scriptures, words, and phrases that represented my desired life’s direction. It encompassed core areas including my career, social life, health, recreation, spirituality, education, relationships, and self care. To create my vision chart I perused favorite magazines and cut out images and words that resonated in my heart.  Creating a vision chart gave me a keen sense of focus and empowerment regarding my future. Although my life was not aimless, it had no tangible  road map. I posted my vision chart in a prominent place and each morning upon rising I speak to my vision and tell it to come forth.

Write the Vision:
Habukah 2:2 counsels us to write the vision on the wall and make it plain so that those who read it will run with it. Though the vision may tarry, it shall come to pass, says the Lord. This scripture implies several important truths. First, God wants us to created a written vision for our life and He wants us to post it so that it will inspire us as well as others. Secondly, having a vision creates movement. Those with a vision are more likely to take action and do what is necessary to fulfill their goals. Having a vision can also galvanize people to stand with you and offer support. Lastly, God said that your vision shall be fulfilled at the appointed time. Therefore creating a vision plan is a guaranteed recipe for success. Don’t get in a hurry or hung up on time. Your vision must come to pass.

Speak to Your Vision:
In the beginning was the word, and the word was God, and the word with God, and the word became flesh and dwelt among man. Before God created the heavens and the earth he had a vision in mind. But it was not until he spoke it out of his mouth that the vision was full-filled. Every great ideas begins in your mind. But that is where it will stay unless you bring it forth by the words you use. Speak to your vision with relevant scriptures and positive affirmation. Your words have power and are alive. The Bibles says that whatever a man speaks from his heart shall come to pass. Therefore, choose words that manifest your vision instead of suppressing or hindering it.

An Ear to Hear
Even if you have no idea how you will accomplish your vision, just writing it down and making it concrete sets your creative energies and the power of the universe in motion. Proverbs tells us that a man plans his ways but it is God who orders his steps. Each day I ask God to give me an ear to hear, eyes to see, and wisdom to discern any opportunities He may be sending my way that support my vision plan. Be sensitive to individuals, resources, information, and literature that come across your path. Always be obedient to the still small voice in your heart that may be nudging you to take a particular course of action. God says he will make our way prosperous and cause our plans to succeed if we will put our trust in Him.

Good Fight of Faith
Don’t let anything deter your from your vision. Matthew…illustrates just how quickly you can lose sight of your vision. One day a sower sowed the word and immediately the enemy came to still the word out of his heart. I want to emphasize the word, “immediately.” Once you have created your vision chart, thoughts of self-doubt, fear, and inadequacy will try to discourage you from going forward. Your vision is your seed to success. Be careful not to let negative thoughts pull up your seeds before they have had time to take root and grow a harvest. Memorize the scripture, “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, of love and of a sound mind,” and use it disingrate any fearful thoughts that plague you.

A Clear Focus
A vision plan focuses your efforts. I created my vision plan on a large cardboard paper canvas. It only had room for so much. In other words, it created boundaries for my vision. I wasn’t writing or pasting pictures on the area outside the canvas. I had to be selective and create my vision based on my heartfelt priorities. If you make your vision too broad or large it may overwhelm you instead of catapult you into action. Therefore, get quiet and do some soul searching. Your vision should truly reflect your authentic self. You can always update your vision as you accomplish your goals or change your desires. If you can’t fill up your vision chart, just start with one corner and add to it when impressed upon. If charts don’t appeal to you, at least make a list of your goals and post it in a prominent location and read it each day. A vision plan will also help you to discontinue, weed out, and say no to activities that aren’t in alignment with your goals.

Seek Balance
Your life is not one dimensional. You are spirit, soul, and body so you want to make sure that your vision plan reflects your whole self. If you spend too much time focused on one or several areas, most likely other aspects of your life are going to suffer. When creating your chart look at each area of your life and access your satisfaction level with each category. For example, you may feel very happy with your career, but believe that your social life needs an overhaul. Strive to create balance by creating a vision of how you’d like each quadrant of your life to look and resist the temptation to put all your energies in one basket.

Stomp Out Fear
Fear is the greatest hindrance to our vision. We fear failure, people’s judgments, making the wrong decisions, and the unknown. However, inaction keeps us from moving into future blessings. If you are having a difficult time making a decision regarding an aspect of your vision, get still, quiet your mind, and ask yourself, “is fear hindering me from moving forward?” If the answer is yes then dispel  the fear and take the appropriate action. A popular book is titled, “feel the fear and do it anyway.” Don’t let fear stand between you and your dreams.

Live in the Moment
You’ve probably heard the saying that life is what’s happening while your waiting for some future accomplishment, desire, or situation to take place. Your life is right now at this very moment. Ask God to help you to enjoy the blessings in your life today. Live consciously by giving your full attention to everything you do. Use daily meditation to help you to quiet your mind and eliminate the incessant thoughts that causes you to constantly project on the future or obsess on the past. Many people spend their whole life for some future goal, not realizing that their life is a journey that is unfolding one day at a time. Break the cycle by having an attitude of contentment and gratitude. Your vision should not be the end all some accomplishment but a daily lifestyle that enhances every area of your life.

Reinvent Yourself
Just like an artist paints a new picture using a blank canvas, you can reinvent yourself and create the life you want. Refuse to allow negative people or self-doubt to tie you to your past. You can recreate or revamp your life by creating a new picture or vision. Creating a vision plan and then nurturing your plan by following the tips in this article will help you to make your dream a reality. Proverbs says that where there is no vision the people perish or have no restraint. A vision plan will add meaning to your life. It will give you a sense of purpose.

Keep God First In All Things

by Minister Darrick D. McGhee

It’s a wonderful day to be a child of God. Today, I wonder if you remembered to tell the Lord, “thank you” for watching over you as you slept last night? Were you so preoccupied with getting to work that you forgot to take time to let God know how much you appreciate Him? Were you so focused on applying your make up, ironing your clothes, getting the children to the bus stop on time, that you forgot to offer God grateful praise? So often throughout our day, we become so focused on keeping our same routine until we forget the most important ingredient for the day. We become so committed to following the traditions of man that we unconsciously block God out of our daily tasks. How did you get where you are in your life? How did you achieve the success you enjoy today? How did you make it through the night when the enemy set demonic attacks against you? It was the Lord’s doing.

Embracing Our Divinity in Christ

Have you heard the saying, I never knew that all I needed was God until God was all I had? We as human-beings are forever attaching ourselves to something in order to feel secure and create an identity. This means usually connecting ourselves to a noun     ( a person, place, or thing). I am a mom; I am a counselor; I own a jaguar; I’m a minister; I have this amount of money saved; I am a member of this church; I’m the CEO of this company, etc. And yes, these may be true but for many of us they circumvent or mask who we really are and they put limits on what we could be. In the event that we should lose a particular title, status, or position we feel lost, fearful, and a big  gaping void may ensue. When we can loose our tight grip and learn to let go of some of these images or false securities, then we become free to experience the true nature of God within us.
