I believe that the greatest goal we can have as a Christian is to continue to grow spiritually, become one with Christ, and let the Holy Spirit live in us and through us. This is far from going to church or doing Christian things. It means seeking and growing closer to God, from within instead of from without.
So how do we do this?
Number #1- We spend time in God’s presence and abide with him. Jesus tells us to abide with Him and that without this abiding we can do nothing. This can be performed by starting a Christian meditation practice where you meditate on scripture, God’s presence, or even in character. We are told in the Bible that in God’s presence is fullness of joy.
Number #2- Seek God above all else. The scriptures say you will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart, but don’t search for God in the church or the temple, as the scriptures say, “The spirit of God lives within you.” As you draw closer to God, He will draw closer to you. Jesus stands at the door of our heart knocking, but we must open the door and let Him in.
Number # 3- Keep your mind and heart pure. The scriptures tell us to renew our minds and purify our hearts from all that would contaminate body and spirit out of reverence for God. Our minds can be our downfall which is why we are told to cast down every thought and imagination that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. This is a daily and ongoing process. We must guard our hearts and minds by continually monitoring them and releasing and letting go of all that will contaminate out spirit.
Number # 4– Know that you are created in God’s image. The scriptures say that we are heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ. By this, God has given you power and authority. In fact, you can speak those things that be not as though they already were, the Bible says. Therefore, walk in this power. God lives inside of you.
Number #5- Continue to learn, memorize, and meditate on God’s word. His word is your sword and ammunition that you can use to fight the good fight of faith for God has given us all power over the enemy, but we must use it.
If you do these things, God will guide you from the inside out and you will not need to ask anyone what is a good goal for Christian life because you will be living it daily in your heart and in connection with Christ. For Christ said, I and the Father are one. So if I had to answer this with one sentence, I would say, “become one with Christ.”
