When many people first begin to pray, they do so because they want help from God, either for themselves or for a friend who is ill or in trouble. Others pray because they hope for reward in another life. Some people want to enjoy inner feelings of light and peace. The deeper your relationship, the less you will want from God. Your chief desire will be to wait in God’s presence. As the Psalmist wrote, “With my whole being I thrist for God, the living God” (Psalms 42:2). In God’s presence, all thoughts of enmity disappear and you long for all beings to enjoy the same bliss.
